Food, articulated in terms of who eats what with whom under which circumstances, had long been one of the most important languages in which Jews conceived and conducted social relations among human beings and between human beings and God. Food was a way of talking about the law and lawlessness...

The elaborate purity system of the first-century Judeans served to classify as much of the world and its objects as possible in terms consonant with the dominant value of "holiness" or "separateness" which was central to their culture. As a chosen people, the Judeans separated themselves from Gentiles; and as a temple-oriented people, they extended the classifications of things suitable for temple purity to other aspects of daily living. Thus a consonant system of replicated classifications told them what could be eaten, whom they could marry, where objects and persons should be positioned, and the like. In short, explicit and implicit "maps" of persons, places, things and times guided Judeans to evaluate or structure all things in their world. What fit this system was holy; what violated it was unclean.

SPARKLING SANGRIA TEA

Makes 8 servings - Chill time: 2 hours

INGREDIENTS

3 cups boiling water
5 tea bags, regular or decaffeinated
1/3 cup sugar
2 cups chilled purple grape juice
1 medium orange, sliced
1 medium lemon, sliced
1 medium lime, sliced
strawberries
chilled club soda

DIRECTIONS

1. In teapot, pour boiling water over tea bags; cover and brew for 5 minutes. Remove tea bags; stir in sugar and cool.

2. In large pitcher, combine tea with remaining ingredients except soda; chill. Just before serving, pour into punch bowl, adding ice and a splash of soda. Garnish, if desired, with orange, lemon, lime, and strawberry slices.

COCKTAIL HOUR

Sipping a French 75 reminds us that champagne hasn't always signified celebration, but has become one of life's lasting symbols: a drink raised in the hour of hope.
To toast occasions that involve an unknown quantity of fear - such as marriage and war - we mix this cocktail with 5 ounces of champagne and 1/4 ounce gin, the spirit that seems to make us smarter. We add 1/4 ounce of both lemon juice and Cointreau for a rounded edge that keeps us from being too reflective.
This luscious cocktail was christened by the French republic, which named it after one of the guns used by the French in World War I. An anodyne for fear, the French 75 - sans lemon and Cointreau - was reputedly sipped by French officers before engaging in battle. [Enlisted men merely received a shot of rum or pinard.]
Mordis Eskteins, author of Rites of Spring, suggests that this disparity reminded the recruits of their "disposable status," and ultimately contributed to the widespread mutinies of 1917. Fortunately, those enlisted men who survived the war held no grudge against this fine drink, and upon returning to their cities and villages, asked for it in their local brasseries.
The Esquire Drink Book of 1956 declares champagne's restorative powers worthy of a million testimonials, and its heartening influence on the lonely soul is incalculable. The gin in this cocktail brings a smile to the lips, a purl to the eyes, and steadiness to the mind.

Number 14. THE MENTAL FOUNDATION

Just as we found number four to be the Foundation Stone or the physical basis upon which nature is built, so we may look upon number 14 as being the Foundation Stone in the mental world or the Mental Foundation upon which must be built the higher mental conceptions of Truth.

As we have said elsewhere, “After having laid the foundation stone, with its four-fold base, upon which the personality must be sacrificed, yet which is necessary to a true foundation, let us lay one more stone upon the pyramid of truth which we are erecting in our lives. Since this pyramid is to be our Tower of Truth in the three worlds,, until we have its foundation laid in each of the worlds our Tower cannot, reach into the heavens. This stone we will call our mental foundation stone.

Paul Klee
December 18, 1879 – June 29, 1940

German-Swiss painter, graphic artist, writer, and teacher, one of the most individual and best-loved figures in 20th-century art. Klee strongly influenced the Bauhaus movement; his detachment earned him the nicknames ‘Bauhaus Buddha’ and ‘the heavenly father.' Klee was particularly close to another theoretician of poetic cast of mind—his colleague Wassily Kandinsky. He enjoyed the avid interest of prominent contributors involved with the artistic revolution, including Pablo Picasso and Rudolph Schaeffer.

At age 7 Klee started playing the violin, and at age 8, he was given a box of chalk from his grandmother and was encouraged to draw frequently with it. Paul could have done either as an adult; in his early years, he had wanted to be a musician, but he later decided on the visual arts during his teen years.

Throughout his life, Paul Klee painted and drew angels of every conceivable description. Some are playful, derived, say from the metaphors of everyday language; others are esoteric, and rooted in Klee’s personal metaphysics. The lithograph Ein Genius serviert ein kleines Frühstück (An angel serves a small breakfast 1920) is the first of its kind. Here, the merely metaphoric use of the angel concept is obvious: a friendly nurse in a hospital might well be called an angel, or an efficient woman handling room service in a hotel. In fact, the figure’s headgear resembles a nurse’s cap. Her eagerness is expressed by her running step and by the tea spilling out of the pot she carries on a tray. Curved lines crossed by slight indications of Cubist scaffolding suggest her swift, light-footed motion. Also in Cubist fashion, the door through which she enters is rendered by two arches, which intersect along the line of her body. These echo the form of a diptych, underlining the picture’s mock-religious character.

Martha Graham was born May 11, 1894 in a small city outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at 6:00 AM. She is the Mother of Modern Dance.

ACROBAT OF GOD

"It takes about ten years to make a mature dancer. The training is two-fold. There is the study and practice of the craft in order to strengthen the muscular structure of the body. The body is shaped, disciplined, honored and, in time, trusted. Movement never lies. It is a barometer telling the state of the soul’s weather to all who can read it. This might be called the law of the dancer’s life—the law which governs its outer aspects.

Then there is the cultivation of the being. It is through this and the legends of the soul’s journey are re-told with all their gaiety and their tragedy and the bitterness and sweetness of living. It is at this point that the sweep of life catches up the mere personality of the performer and while the individual (the undivided one), becomes greater, the personal becomes less personal. And there is grace. I mean the grace resulting from faith… faith in life, in love, in people, in the act of dancing. All this is necessary to any performance in life which is magnetic, powerful, rich in meaning.

In a dancer there is a reverence for such forgotten things as the miracle of the small beautiful bones and their delicate strength. In a thinker there is a reverence for the beauty of the alert and directed and lucid mind. In all of us who perform there is an awareness of the smile which is part of the equipment, or gift, of the acrobat. We have all walked the high wire of circumstance at times. We recognize the gravity pull of the earth as he does. The smile is there because he is practicing living at that instant of danger. He does not choose to fall."

Graham's father was an "alienist," [possibly symbolized by Jupiter 8° Gemini 19' , in her First House, along with Pluto and Neptune], indicating philosophy combined with the healing arts. Alienist was the term then used to describe a physician who specialized in human psychology. The close proximity of Pluto 9° Gemini 49' and Neptune 12° Gemini 24' suggest an interest and probable experience with repeated near-death events. The thin line between life and death was certainly a fascinating subject for father and daughter. Dr. Graham was particularly interested in the way people used their bodies, an interest that he passed on to his eldest daughter. In later years, Martha Graham often repeated her father's dictum: "movement never lies."

… Based on her own interpretation of the Delsartean principle of tension and relaxation, Graham identified a method of breathing and impulse control she called "contraction and release." For her, movement originated in the tension of a contracted muscle, and continued in the flow of energy released from the body as the muscle relaxed. This method of muscle control gave Graham's dances and dancers a hard, angular look…

In "Primitive Mysteries," the choreographer combined her interest in the religious rites of American Indians with an exploration of other religious rites, including pagan and Catholic ceremonies. In this 1931 work, Graham danced the priestess figure called the Virgin, and her ensemble become the society of independent women who surround her and worship her. "Primitive Mysteries" represents a number of important advances for Graham. First, the choreographic focus is firmly on the corps of dancers rather than on the solo figure, pointing to a fundamental shift in the way Graham was approaching the architecture of dance. Second, the narrative of the dance is not presented in a literal way, but uses only a pure, abstract movement vocabulary to bring its story to life. And finally, "Primitive Mysteries" was Graham's first critical masterpiece, garnering attention from critics, artists and audiences around the world.

… Egyptian medicine was as much art (that is to say, magic) as it was science. Even today, people instinctively talk of the ‘healing art’. And the secrets of this art that are not lost forever are inaccessible to the uncomprehending analytic mind. But if the testimony of ancient sources has any real value, that testimony invariably refers to the Egyptians as the healthiest race of the ancient world.

Schwaller de Lubicz’s study validates this ancient testimony. A generally high level of health is consistent with a civilization based upon metaphysical realities, in which medicine understood man as a whole ideally in tune with the cosmos. When out of tune, the body was seen as unhealthy or diseased. But because it was intimately connected to the rhythms, harmonies and pulsations of both terrestrial and extraterrestrial spheres, it was susceptible of being brought back into tune by the deliberate summoning-up of the specific harmonic phenomena pertinent to the case.

The following brief excerpts are taken from a newsletter circulated several years ago, but the info holds true now, more than ever. The Posterior Pituitary Gland, or Back Pituitary Gland is governed by the Moon and is the way to the Phoenix. -DKD

The Posterior Pituitary Gland

This gland which we call the post pit gland is also known as the Queen gland for it controls the reproductive processes in women. We find that eighty-eight percent of the women we see have some deficiency in these glandular secretions. Thirty-nine percent of the men we see also have some deficiency in the output of this gland. It is the cause of some cases of baldness at the crown of the head in men, and is the cause of large calves in the mid-sections of the legs of women. Another indication of a deficiency in this gland is a double dip or depression in the thighs near the hip joint. Some of the most beautiful female legs are due to the curvature in the mid-section of the lower legs. However, deficient post pituitaries can cause other less desirable things... The use of sugar or even natural sugars as found in fruits can make the gland worse, contributing to a devastating kind of depression. When it is impossible for a woman to become pregnant and have children the cause may be in this glandular deficiency. A less severe case may result in spontaneous abortion, time after time, and nearly everyone (particularly women) know of such cases...

Toynbee, the eminent historian states that there have been thirty-four civilizations in the last 10,000 years of which only four exist at the present time. Some of them were lost through warfare, disease or starvation, but there were nineteen of these civilizations that disappeared without any known cause.

In researching the use of sugar I have found that our predecessors in America had sugar for only about two hundred years. At first it was only the wealthy that could afford it and the annual consumption was only a very few pounds per year. Now the average consumption is over two hundred pounds per year per person.

The use of sugar and alcohol is what affects the posterior pituitary gland and causes it to lose it’s function. This causes many diseases and because of number of women who cannot conceive is probably nearly ten percent now, and which figure is steadily increasing, I have come to the conclusion that sugar and alcohol was probably the cause of the disappearance of these nineteen civilizations because of the infertility of the women who used sugar and alcohol... Sugar is used by nearly all of the people throughout the world...
