John Bonzo Bonham -- May 31st 1948 to September 25th 1980

 

John Bonzo Bonham is the preeminent rolling thunder of Led Zeppelin, an electric magnetism that animates music of the finest heavy metal rock group to emerge from the rock and roll era to date. When he was five, he assembled his own drum kit made of some kitchen tins and containers. He had the gift. His parents encouraged him and helped inspire his self confidence. When he was 15 they gave him a full drum set so he could shape his talent into his now renowned and unique skill set.

The career name of legendary Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham refers us back to an ancient code formulated under the old North Star. Keys in Qabalah suggest Bonham is a name carrying not only clan karma but can be read as part of an extended storehouse of root systems connected to the parents of the Supernal. Michael, the strong right arm of God, is mentioned by name as the Archangel of Sol and Fire. Verbs like to tread, trample, slaying, and mourning, suggest the origin of a dynamic within the mighty Zeppelin catalog that produced When The Levee Breaks and Trampled Underfoot. Born John Henry Bonham on May 31,1948 in Redditch, Worcestershire UK, his radix Sun shone forth from those mystical degrees of Gemini, in conjunction with 'the driver' star Aldebaran. When attention is well directed insights can emerge from the unconscious mind that empower the interpreter, prophet and anchor as a psyche center for a collective group. The guiding pole star found in this constellation symbolizes the important principle of truth that must ever be our guide.

John Bonham was born with a star chart for both an instrumental musician and a musical composer. We know Bonzo was born close to dawn, so his radix Sun was near the Ascendant cusp at the time, with Vulcanus and conjunct Uranus probably in his ascendant, and Neptune in his fifth house, a star chart ideal for a musical composer. Just as instrumental musicians have their Moon or Neptune prominent, and Bonzo would have his Pisces Moon in his Midheaven if his Gemini Sun were ascending, the musical composer has Uranus and Neptune prominent. Both planets are related to precognition, cosmic rhythm, and sponsor masters of illusion. Mercury rules Gemini and, in conjunction with Uranus, performs like a heart beating in and out. If in his ascendant, the combo provides lightning quick adaptation, another indication of originality. She hangs by a thread from a giant web which we do not see.

It is not surprising that someone with an innate intuitive and adaptive 6th sense would pursue the drum. Since human history began, ancient drums have been heard booming through space as the traditional form of communication, keys to unlock the doorway to the underworld spirit-akasha and our inner being, and for the inspiration and regulation of social and political ceremony. We built this city on rock & roll.

Gemini, The Twins symbolizes builders, founders, fathers of new civilizations: Castor and Pollux, Romulus and Remus, Gilgamesh and the Animal Man, and so on. Gemini had a title, 'the pile of bricks,' the name Hermes comes from, herma, the Greek word for a cairn or heap of stones. Eastern philosophers symbolize certain of the gods who labored with the universe during its making as connecting the realms of light with those of darkness by means of webs. Therefore the builders of the cosmic system who held the embryonic universe together with threads of invisible force were sometimes referred to as the Spider Gods. Rome shuffled, shifted and merged traditions in an effort to undo the unity of existing collectives when their empire came to power. Their strategy was to deconstruct behavioral routines, rites, and rituals of a culture of conquered nations, in part by canceling lunar mansions and replacing them with the solar zodiac.

When Rome came to power the sign Gemini referred to the idea of the spirit in a vessel, like a bird in a golden cage. After that, Castor and Pollux emerged from the cosmic swan egg, the sons of Leda, wife of Tyndareus, the King of Sparta. Many birds employ the same masonry techniques in their nest-building as humans use to make bricks and build, they too use mud mixed with fibrous material like chaff and straw. In India the god Prana, personification of the universal life force, is sometimes shown surrounded by a circle of bees. The bee is a symbol of wisdom, for as this tiny insect collects pollen from the flowers, men may extract wisdom from the experiences of daily life. Because of its importance in the pollenizing of flowers, the bee is the accepted symbol of the generative power.
The letter Z in Zeppelin sounds like the bee buzzing in the meadow and carries audio recognition links with Led Zeppelin names such Bonzo, Zoso, Zooma, and zo on. The reverse image of Z, with a similar sound, is the letter S, also present in Led Zeppelin symbolism, lyrics, dress and particularly body language preferred by all band members. The Taurus-Gemini part of the zodiac contains the reflex action of the bee and the spider in nature as well as mystic sciences. They introduce honey and poison, according to the way people engage their environment. We may be friends of the earth, even take the role of partner, or in the worst case scenario, act as people who introduce pollutants into shared space. Construction and building can be an expression of positive Mars energy that can establish harmony in our outer paradigm, supplement vitality, and maintain balance. All these by products bring health to the human psyche and community life. Designs in architecture, art, and dance are used to facilitate natural law that can also be expressed through the enduring beat of the drum. Ridley Scott, filming Gladiator, said the Romans used to fling both bread and serpents into the stands at the same time, targeting those who attended the games. That was their philosophy of the dual expression of day-to-day life.

In 1964, Bonham joined his first semi-professional band, Terry Webb and the Spiders, and met his future wife Pat Phillips around the same time. Bonzo played around the Midlands with local groups in the summer of 67, The Summer of Love. Following a year with Terry Webb and the Spiders and a local dance scene, Bonham expanded his range and joined A Way of Life. Enter Robert Plant.
During the second half of that year, Bonham and singer Robert Plant committed to the Birmingham based troupe, Band of Joy. Plant has been following several San Francisco bands and Jefferson Airplane caught his attention at the time, possibly because they did not meddle with their songs so they could be squeezed into radio air play limits. When Bonzo and Plant were together in the Band of Joy, they extended songs well beyond the AM radio dial norm. Buffalo Springfield, an example of their style of improvisation, interested them as well.
Some biographical accounts have a time capsule distinction that places Bonzo during his earlier musical forays as a session man as well. Teaming up with Plant provided Gemini-Bonzo an outlet for his versatile personality, The Twins. He began to enjoy excellent new material with a concept he could use as replacement for karma themes and templates he had labored with until then.

From the Led Zeppelin biography by Richie Yorke, In 1964, when the British hit parade was dominated by Cilla Black, the Beatles, the Dave Clark Five, the Searchers, the Merseybeats and Brian Poole and the Tremeloes, 16-year old Bonham joined his first group, Terry Webb and the Spiders. My dad bought me my first full drum kit when I was 15 and a half. It was almost prehistoric, most of it was rust. Now I really do look after my drums and people who do not annoy me. As soon as I left school I decided I was going to be a drummer and I was very determined. In Terry Webb and the Spiders we used to wear purple jackets with velvet lapels. The singer wore a gold lame jacket, and we all had greased hair and string ties.
Bonham stayed with the band a year, and during that time met his future wife, Pat Phillips, at a dance near his home in Kidderminster. Just after he moved on to his second group, A Way of Life, at the age of 17, they were married. The Aquarian Tarot ties super number 22 with the mother weaver or builder, with a web that links light and darkness. This deck is rumored to originate with a group who went to Mexico during the mid-60s and ate magic mushrooms with the local shaman. Symbolism is clearly pre-Roman. The text reads, in part, as follows
Over the head of the Nameless One hovers the Spider the Cosmic Spider or Great Mother who spins the web of Destiny. She hangs by a thread from a giant web which we do not see. Who or what is the Spider? The Spider, although clearly separate from the Nameless One, is also part of him and indispensable to him. One gets the impression that the Spider is enormously sentient and aware and that the Nameless One senses through every one of its tentacles or legs. The Spider does not appear to be sinister; rather it is protective. The Spider is the Nameless Ones constant connection with the Divine and with the Web of the Universal Spinning, or with the entire Manifestation of the One Being. Thus in the Book of the Nameless One there is a hint that there is a One beyond the One or the Self, and that there is a constant flow of connection between the two. There is, however, no feeling of duality. Rather there is a feeling of a great dimension of Beingness behind Being.

Bonham was born with Sol 9 Gem 53, a sustaining, warming influence known for its Mercurial characteristic of personalized communication, inventiveness, and love of novelty. The Sun always refers to creative ability and the vital force within the overall life path. In Gemini, Sol is drawn to an occupation with the emphasis on communication skill reliant on quick wit and reason, with an active mind that responds well to any unexpected turn of events. Fondness for home and family is always in the forefront of the Geminian mentality. Children introduce the role of parenting, and take precedence over auto-pilot routines and the daily grind. Bonham and Robert Plant have Venus in Moonchild so they often rise to challenges and rewards in life through the influence of women. Enemies are subdued and adversarial forces are exposed to sunlight, an effective antiseptic with a reserved place in every home.

The dexterous capability of Gemini is unmistakable. It is a trademark that can lead to multitasking. Gems often have several hobbies, work two jobs simultaneously, perhaps even living in two different locations to minimize an extensive commute. They sometimes like the drums because the right hand never knows what the left hand is doing. Monotony will lead Gems to the dark side. Bonzo enjoyed the opportunity to stay busy. He would cultivate mental dynamics even if not immersed in rigorous physical activity.

Bonham enjoyed a good creative relationship with Plant, on and off stage because both were born with their Moon in Pisces, sign of musicians, composers, poets, interpreters, and the opera. Both men enjoyed the extensive tours because journeys to far distant places opened doors to their own inner life experiences. Bonzo traded off on a lucky trine aspect between his Gemini Sun and Neptune 11 Libra in the star chart for Plant. This aspect facilitates the power of Gemini, in harmony with the spiritual, utopian quest Neptune follows. The ability to understand people from all walks of life is pronounced. There is a strong psychic tie here, too. This aspect aids mutual confidence. There is a great deal of cooperative work accomplished and deeper sympathy between both individuals. In friendship enjoyment of music and aesthetic, occult or metaphysical interests ensures congeniality.

Mercury, the ruling planet of Gemini, symbolizes the spark, quick as lightning, that animates the mind. Mercury is the Messenger and Psychopomp or 'soul guide'. He heralds current changes on the horizon, communications of all kinds, especially through sound-music. Once Bonham and Plant got things rolling, the following year and a half brought many professional and social experiences that later on proved invaluable. Bonham took to the world stage like it was second nature. Mercurial children are found in large numbers within the ranks of troubadours, wandering minstrels, and mummers who were so popular in the Middle Ages.

Gemini governs the bipolar nature of a beating heart, the rhythm of the universe breathing in and out, so love of the drum is not surprising. Gems are known for trained speaking and singing voices, and they also excel playing music on stringed instruments. Cymbals and instruments that produce clash sounds are attributed to Jupiter, Lord of the Sky known for his thunder and lightning bolts, considered to be the prototype of music itself. Both Bonzo and Plant were born with Jupiter in Sagittarius, natural sign of Jupiter. Plant has Jupiter in the Ascendant in Sag, conferring the image of someone with a jovial disposition and noble nature, who is just. Love of long distance travel via Jupiter in the first house even transcends the tale of legendary Vikings.

Gemini likes to warm up with the local color and enjoys a friendly community gathering as much as the next person. Bonzo's Jupiter-Uranus opposition that often operates is a double edged sword generates an opportunity to expand, explore, and gain through legacy, law, and gifts of money. When the influence reverses however, the winds of change can cause these atmospheric conditions to go south very quickly. Bonham had his Moon in his 1967 progressed star chart marching to the beat of the Sagittarian rhythm of Sleipnir (Old Norse "slippy" or "the slipper") Odin's eight-legged horse, a means of transportation used by shamans in their ecstatic travels throughout the cosmos.

The universal outlook was that of Pegasus, Roman and Greek representation of Sleipnir, an ideal packaging for Mighty Zepp on tour. Bonzo's lunar sojourn through Sag, the reflex sign for Gemini, helped open a new vista for expression of Bonham's considerable intellectual dexterity. Gemini and Sagittarius represent lower mind, what is self taught, and higher mind (guru and student). Both share the same wide-ranging curiosity about life, desire to attain new knowledge, and interest in foreign language or cultures,** akin to what Jung would call the individuation process. The full spectrum of style and mixed variations that distinguished Zeppelin world wide were instantly apparent in their first rehearsal together with The Train Kept Rolling, and they all knew pentecostal music. Their full mosaic scores ranged from scarlet to akasha black. Bonzo and John Paul Jones enjoyed soul, with Page and Plant who were into heavy blues, layering rhythm and blues backgrounds.

Gemini, The Twins, dominate 20.0% of his star chart, suggesting perhaps both hands, traditionally associated with Castor and Pollux, defer to nerves in the wrist when drumming, much the way a dowser locates the mother dome that leads to potable water in the ground. For those with psychic gifts associated with the sign of the mystical weaver, there is premonitory insight, an ability to anticipate events a few moments before they take place. The place for Mars in 5 Virgo indicates psychometric thought and hyper-sensitive touch skill, sometimes used in detective work to locate missing people and property. Musicians in a creative and spontaneous atmosphere benefit enormously by way of networking with performers with strong Gemini and Virgo who jam and play jazz till the sun comes up. 

Nick Kent said of Zeppelin, when interviewed by Dave Lewis for TBL in 2010, The way that they worked together was they talked about music, they played music and they ribbed each other. There was a lot of banter. Lots of bravado and Monty Python. It was the way they interacted and it built camaraderie amongst them. They were different individuals for sure but there was a healthy respect between the four of them because they all knew how important they each were to the mix. Take one of them out and you had a big problem. Grant knew it, they all knew it.
Richie Yorke writes in, LedZep The Led Zeppelin Biography, His preference for the tone of tight, taught pigskin ultimately led Bonham to perform solos with his bare hands. Bonzo said, I have been doing that for an awfully long time. It goes back to when I first joined up with Robert Plant. Years and years ago, I saw a group on a jazz program do it. I think that started me off. It really impressed me one helluva lot. It was not so much what you could play with your hands. You just got a lovely little tone out of the drums that you could not get with sticks. I thought it would be a good thing to do, so I have been doing it ever since. You really do get an absolutely true drum sound because there is no wood involved. It hurts your hands at first, but then the skin hardens and now I think I can hit a drum harder with my hands than with sticks.

July 7, 1968 is the date credited with the Yardbirds break-up, when Jimmy Page formed the New Yardbirds, but in response to a comment made by Keith Moon, It.ll probably go over like a lead zeppelin, he changed the name to Led Zeppelin.
The Mighty Zeppelin contributed 10 albums during their collaboration (including Coda, posthumously in 1982) and a variety of other musical delights featuring their own signature film, The Song Remains The Same. Each band member designed their own visual and musical fantasy theme within the whole performance format. By the time the movie was made Bonzo’s progressed Sun was already under the influence of Luna’s own sign, Moonchild (Cancer). Regarded as the zodiacal sign governing home and clan matters, the dream sequence patterns by Bonham carried a textural quality somewhat akin to a classic home movie.

Jimmy Page recalls, "At this time a number of drummers had approached me and wanted to work with us. Robert suggested I go hear John Bonham, whom I had heard of because he had a reputation, but had never seen. I asked Robert if he knew him and he told me they had worked together in this group called Band Of Joy." Bonzo was the last Zeppelin member on board ~ as drummer and percussionist ~ just in time for the debut performance on October 15, 1968 at Surry University. The group changed names only once (originally The New Yardbirds) as they scaled upward to the heights, where their unmistakable star shines today. In February 1970, Led Zeppelin appeared in Copenhagen under the pseudonym The Nobs, their only incognito performance on record, because of the threat of a suit by Eva Von Zeppelin, a relative of the airship designer Ferdinand.

The song most associated with Bonham, 'Moby Dick', is married to images of his wife and son Jason, who grew into the circle of legendary rock and roll drummers, to take his own place, the same as his father. Love of Motorcross racing (Gemini-Sagittarius sport), also shared by father and son, flashes across the screen like a stroke of lightning during TSRTS racing scene. Jason donates proceeds from his CDs to "John Bonham Memorial Motorcycle Camp for Kids."

Although Zeppelin’s presence was so powerful the music world expected the band would play into infinity, the destiny path scored for this prolific group looms as large and unique as the individuals comprising it. Unusual twists and turns were woven into Zepp’s dance to the top of the mountain by the Spinners of such great tapestries. Bonzo played his last date July 7, 1980.

 

 

Bonham’s personal destiny pathway was somehow illuminated around midnight of the 23rd of September, 1980. It was as though oversoul whispered and prepared him for the opening door before him. The close of the Saturn Return usually runs on a parallel path with new threads that will go into play over the coming 29-30 years but the resolution of karma is an individual matter. One door opens and another door closes yet differently for each one of us, there's never a one size fits all pattern.

Note September 24 episodes when Bonham was picked up by Zep assistant Rex King for rehearsals at Bray Studios. The upcoming North American tour, 'Feather in the Wind Over Europe 1980', first tour since 1977, was scheduled to commence on 17 October. First, a brief breakfast stopover on the road. Bonzo drank four quadruple vodkas (450 ml), with a ham roll. After taking a bite of the ham roll he said to his assistant, “Breakfast”.
Other ‘refreshment breaks’ at the studio, and drinks afterward at Page’s new house in Windsor, probably contributed the most damage to Bonham’s physical repair effort. The cause of his demise, the autopsy found, was asphyxiation - no drugs other than alcohol. This closing Saturn scenario recreated, with an eerie echo, the sad circumstances that prevailed at Bonham's birth. He was "still" [a nigredo], pronounced dead by the doctor, and later resuscitated by a nurse who stayed and continued attempts to save him.
That was the week Zeppelin band mates were to convene at Jimmy Page’s home to work up the new songs for an upcoming tour through Europe, then in America in 1981 with their next album. So, the same factors that propelled the group to the top of the charts initially faced off to form a 180 degree opposition, like a pendulum reversing its swing, and began to undo the constructive composition of the band.

The impact was probably especially difficult for Robert Plant who had also started an internal identity revision on the 25th of September, as several heavenly bodies within his progressed chart were transitioning from one sign to another at 0 degrees. The effects of the in-door out-door materializing before both Bonham and Plant were profound for them both at the same instant, but in entirely different ways.

Bonhan and Plant both cleared past karma issues and attained closure within a short time of the Autumnal Equinox a few days before, but via different methods. Perhaps this was due to lack of information in our modern world about how these doors work. When doors open it is optional whether you walk through if you have personal wish to remain in this dimension. If karma is complete energy can be processed and transformed while incarnate. Shortly before Christmas of 1980 the surviving band members came to the conclusion they wouldn’t be a viable entity any more without Bonham as their drummer and disbanded. John Bonham’s brother recently announced a very personal 30th anniversary photo collection of pictures off stage, from behind the curtains. Jason Bonham continues to perform with the biggest names in Rock ‘n Roll.

    Led Zeppelin reunion
Guitarist Jimmy Page, singer Robert Plant, bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer Jason Bonham performed together in tribute to Ahmet Ertegun, founder of Atlantic Records, on December 10 at London's 02 Arena.

 

    When The Levee Breaks Rehearsals were initiated for a new Mighty Zeppelin tour of America at Liveware Theatre in Ealing the afternoon of November 26, 1974, according to Dave Lewis. Some of the selected songs for live delivery from < I>Physical Graffiti were checked. When The Levee Breaks, new to the set, had never been played on stage before. The whole band was glowing because of the tour after all the lay-offs, and with good reason. As 1975 advanced their favorable augury for success would prove justified, in flying colors.

 

    2009 Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards
A Classic Rock magazine panel of judges has voted to honor the late John Bonham with this year's Tommy Vance Inspiration Award.
On hand at London's Park Lane Hotel to receive the posthumous honor last night were the drummer's mother, Joan Bonham, and his sister, Deborah Bonham.
The award was sponsored by Rhino Records.

After 26 hours of labour, baby John's heartbeat had stopped and the drunken doctor on duty had left. Thankfully, the nurse had quickly called another doctor who managed to revive him. In the day leading up to his premature death, Bonham had been on a 12-hour binge drinking session, which began at noon and lasted until midnight, when he fell unconscious. He had consumed an alarming 40 units of vodka. (Welch & Nicholls, 2001, pg 120) The UK’s recommended maximum intake of alcoholic beverages per day for men is 3-4 units. After falling unconscious on a sofa, he was put to bed by an assistant where he could sleep off his drunkenness. The assistant laid him on his side with pillows for support.

First recording of "Levee Breaks" by writer-musician husband and wife Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie, in 1929, is the response to the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. Many performers have since recorded a treatment of the song that is like the original. Some musicians have gone forward with their own versions, like Led Zeppelin, however Zeppelin produced a new sound effect that is based solely on the place of Bonham's new drumkit in the corner of the front hall. Page discusses the location of Bonzo's drum set at Headley Grange when Zeppelin recorded their fourth album in 1970. The extreme height and multi-surfaced design of the foyer is responsible for his unique drum sound. Drummers began to look for high, elevator shaft like locations as a result, soas to capture the thundering effect created by Zeppelin's version of the song. Wires trailed outside, through the window and door, to a large studio on wheels parked outside the front door.
